Prayer is your opportunity to shine a light in this present world.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.

15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Mt 5:14-16, NRSV)

Each of us holds the responsibility to illuminate the cosmos through the power of prayer. When darkness looms, it’s our duty to light a prayer. In times of confusion, it’s our role to bring clarity through prayer. When illness or infirmity strikes a loved one, it’s our obligation to bring healing through prayer. And when injustice reigns, it’s our task to bring about change through prayer.
Jesus encouraged his followers to see the possibility of their influence. Prayer is one of the many ways that we can realize the possibility of that influence. Larry Dossey, M.D. in his book, “Be Careful What You Pray For…You just Might Get” acknowledges the profound influence of prayer upon our human condition. He presents compelling evidence of how prayer can bring about healing, peace, and positive change, not just in individuals, but also in communities and the world at large.
Throughout the Hebraic and Christian Scriptures, we find numerous instances of prayer that have brought about change in communities, nations, and individual lives. These are not solitary acts, but a collective effort of those who took the time to pray for what they believed in. This is how prayer becomes a beacon of light in a world that is in desperate need of it. Let’s unite and shine our light today!
